SOUTH HAVEN, Mich.– Dec. 13, 2016) – Entergy’s Palisades Power Plant remains committed to the Southwest Michigan community, participating yesterday in a dedication ceremony at a South Haven home, built through a partnership between Entergy and the Van Buren County Habitat for Humanity.
Entergy donated $95,000 to provide a local family with a safe, healthy place to live. Volunteers and the new homeowner, Russell Hiatt, helped build the three-bedroom home, off Green Street. Hiatt, an Army veteran, says it is the perfect Christmas present for his wife, Mary, and their 3-year-old daughter, Ariel.
“It’s been tough over the last few years for my family. Just in the last year-and-a-half, our young daughter has had three surgeries, including open heart surgery. Owning this home isn’t something we would have been able to do without the help of Entergy and Habitat. It’s a blessing. We love this home and the area, and we expect to live here for the rest of our lives,” said Hiatt.
Entergy’s partnership with Habitat is one example of how the company is staying dedicated to the surrounding community, even after the announcement of the shutdown of Palisades in 2018. For the holiday season in December, Palisades’ employees will donate gifts to dozens of senior citizens at a local nursing home and deliver Christmas cards to West Michigan veterans.
Entergy recognizes the impact a closure will have on the surrounding community and its approximately 600 employees who have the run plant safely and reliably, and pledges to support both during the transition. Entergy and Consumers Energy Foundation will provide a total of $10 million over several years in economic development funding for the Southwest Michigan region. The companies will consult with the Council of Michigan Foundations and local stakeholders as it relates to the distribution of these funds.
Entergy is also committed to treating employees fairly throughout this process and will assist employees who want to relocate within Entergy or leave the company. In addition, Consumers Energy will consider potential placement of up to 180 appropriately skilled employees from Palisades into the utility’s workforce over time.
Palisades is a well-run and safely operated facility, inspected rigorously by independent experts at the NRC who assure safety. The plant has an immensely talented, dedicated, and loyal workforce, and the plant is recognized as a top performer within the industry.
