Safety Investments Highlight of Palisades Open House

Covert, Mich. – Palisades Nuclear Power Plant is investing millions of dollars in safety improvements and invites the public to learn more during a public open house, which will be held on June 16 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Palisades’ Emergency Operations Facility and Joint Information Center, located at 330 West Main Street, Benton Harbor. Additionally, visitors will be invited to tour the emergency facilities and learn more about how the public would be informed in case of a serious accident Palisades.

“We are investing millions of dollars to improve safety at Palisades, specifically in response to the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan in 2011. We’re also making plant modifications to implement deeper layers of fire protection,” said Site Vice President Tony Vitale. “We have a relentless pursuit of safety at Palisades. We’re making Palisades even safer by adopting lessons-learned from the nuclear industry and taking extra steps to protect against catastrophic events.”

This open house is part of Palisades’ ongoing efforts to increase transparency and communication with local community members, which was discussed by plant leadership during the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s annual public meeting to discuss Palisades’ safety performance in 2014, held April 9.

“We believe our own employees, the men and women who work every day to ensure that Palisades operates safely, are the best source of information regarding our operations,” said Vitale.

In addition, American Red Cross and Palisades fire brigade representatives will be available to discuss home safety strategies. By providing home safety information and fire detection equipment to homeowners, the Team Fire Stoppers program seeks to lower the number of fire-related injuries and deaths in southwest Michigan.

“Fire protection is very important to us at Palisades. Our in-house fire brigade has earned industry and national recognition for their training program and we’re very excited to partner with the Red Cross and share fire safety tips with our community,” said Vitale.

This event is open to all members of the community. Because there will be no formal presentation, visitors will have the opportunity to have one-on-one discussions on topics that interest them with subject matter experts.
